For many people the loss of a tooth or several teeth can have a devastating effect on them. They may be able to have crowns, bridges or dentures, but to some people these forms of treatment are only seen as a temporary measure because they may fell they want some sort of permanent solution to their problem.

Not all people can cope with dentures and worry about their appearance too.

In these instances, an implant may be an ideal solution. There are many makes of implants on the market and each individual dental practice offer different systems.

However the process is basically the same, whichever implant is used.

Initially, a titanium post is placed into the jaw bone and this then acts as an artificial root. It is covered with a temporary placement and left in the jaw to integrate with natural bone for between 4 to 6 months.

After the post has integrated and the dentist is happy with the placement a crown or bridge is made and placed on top of the implant to create a permanent natural looking tooth.

Implants can also be used with a denture in the form of a clip-on to stabilise movement.

This form of treatment is only available privately unless massive trauma would justify treatment on the NHS.

The systems that we currently use are called 'Bicon' and 'Biohorizons'. If you are interested in having implants placed you will initially need an extensive consultation, where impressions are taken of your mouth and digital x-ray equipment is used to check the suitability of this treatment for you. After treatment our back-up care monitors progress on a regular basis.
